Information about the school

Site of the school

The type of our school is a theoretical one. There are 947 students and 56 teachers. Our students are between 6 and 19 years of age which means that our educational field includes primary, lower secondary, secondary and high school classes. Our goals are focused on increasing the rate of promoted students after the national examinations; reducing the number of students who drop out school when they are about to graduate; increasing our high school graduates’ degree of social intrusion; a 20% rise in the number of projects developed with the local authorities and community in order to harmonize the relationship between our school and the local community. Some of the social activities we have developed so far were entitled “Helping without being rewarded“, “Save your life! Live green!“, “Let’s do it, Danube!“, “Health-the best of our goods“, “Stay intelligent do not be violent!“We have a rate of 100% qualified teachers with good methodological and specialized training. The level of our teachers’ professional qualifications is expressed by their determination to become better in their carreers. 48.27% of our teachers have the first degree in teaching (the highest rank), 25.86% have the second degree, 17.24% obtained the tenure and only 15.17% of the teachers are on probation.Regarding the courses we serve our students, there are compulsory ones, according to their specializations (Mathematics-Informatics, Natural Sciences, Social Studies and Philology). All the specializations mentioned above are specific to high school classes. There are also optional courses. Our school is situated in an urban area called Galați which is also the county city. The city lies in the South-East of Romania, on the right bank of the river Danube, 80 km away from the Danube Delta and 230 km from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. Galați is also the main river-sea city harbour.
Liceul Teoretic “Mircea Eliade“ is situated in a district called “Micro 40“, an industrial area-it is the only theoretical high school in the area.We have four students with special needs (one is attending primary classes, two are attending secondary classes and one is at high school). 36.71% of our students come from the rural areas whereas 63.29% of them live in the city. We also have 10 students who come from Roma families but we don’t have students who are refugees. The scope of our school is a national one. The educational needs of our students, that were identified at the level of our local community, aims at the following aspect: the result of the education provided by us must be a European citizen qualified for a professional and social competition, having healthy moral principles and a well-developed personality. The specializations the students get in our school offers the graduates the opportunity to attend courses in higher educational institutions.
We developed quite a large number of national projects among which we would like to mention “Borderless Workshops!“, “Build your career step by step – Professional counselling and orientation for students who come from the centre and South-East of Romania“, Let’s do it, Romania!“, “Media Junior“, The global campaign for education with “Save the children!“ Organization, “The Global Education Week“. Our school has two Informatics laboratories. 60% of our teachers have attended ICT training courses which can be applicable on the job market. We also had international projects with countries like Turkey, Norway, Italy, France, Portugal, Poland and Bulgaria.

In 2009-2011 we developed a Comenius Bilateral project entitled “Connecting Two Innovative European Countries with Two Strong Creative Bridges: Language and Plays” with `Erdil Koleji` in Istanbul. Norway was our partner in a project called `Cherish life through keeping a diet and exercising!` . The project was financed by the Ministry of Health. In 2013-2015 we had a Multilateral Comenius project entitled `I Love My Future As A European Citizen`. The coordinator of the project was `Çaybaşı Ortaokulu` a school situated near Bursa, Turkey. The partners were schools from Italy, France, Portugal, Poland and Bulgaria.
Our school’s strong points would be that we have 100% qualified teachers, a qualified educational teaching process which can be seen into the high percentage of promoted students at the national exams, a large number of teachers attending training courses. 80% of our students attend a higher education institution when they graduate from our high school, we have functional labs for certain subjects as well as enough space to organize our activities; we have also developed a large number of partnerships with the local community representatives.
The weak points would be that some of our students don’t reflect upon their school itinerary before choosing a specialization; 10% of our students’ parents live in other countries and left their children in other relatives’ care; low extra-budgetary income. As opportunities, we have a close relationship with `Mircea Eliade` High School’s Parents’ Association; there are national programmes that provide scholarships abroad; education is a national priority feature in our school; we are interested in exchanging ideas and good practice.
The threats we experience are the migrating of our teachers to other work fields and the formality of some partner institutions in developing the collaboration contracts. Our school priorities refer to promoting the image and popularity of our school; specialized counseling and support offered to the families of our students who experience the early school leaving phenomenon; a 20%rise in the rate of involving our students in activities included in community projects or programmes. The questionnaires we applied showed us that the students, parents and teachers share the same aims, getting involved in putting them into practice. The students feel safe within the institution they attend.
Our schools meets the educational, career couneling and orientation needs of our primary and secondary school students. Considering the changes in the near future we would like to identify the financial resources to renovate some buildings or enclosures belonging to our school. We also deal with a large number of high school absentees due to their wrong decision in choosing their specialization. Parents also deal with the lack of time because of the economical background that reduces their involvement in their children’s school lives. The rapid pace of technological changes leads to the moral wearing out of the equipment we use. There will be 10 teachers involved in the activities of the project. Other 6 teachers will be actively involved in the project.Their names are: AdrianDiacănu(Headmaster), Daniela Macsim (Deputy Headmaster), Mihaela Măcrineanu (Biology teacher), Gabriela Baston (Maths teacher), Niculina Coman (Physics teacher) and Cristina Grecu (English teacher). They have participated in numerous national and international projects and are willing to improve their skills.
