Granular synthesis is a basic sound synthesis method that operates on the microsound time scale.
It is based on the same principle as sampling, however, samples are not played back conventionally, but rather split into very short pieces – known as „grains“. The length of the grains is variable, normally between 1 and 50 milliseconds. These grains can be arranged in many different combinations.
It’s useful because one gets a lot more depth into the audio file itself, having the ability to rearrange every piece of the audio in order to create various textures.
I will upload a short demonstration of granular synthesis.
The 10 second audio sample was created by one single key press on a piano, sped up then artificially pitched down and looped continuously – three „waves“ were created.
Enjoy!
